Take a VR Journey Inside the Brain at the American Underground

• The Meetup

What if you could go inside the brain? Health Impact Studios will be hosting the next RTPVR meetup and demoing VR Brain Exploration! Explore the brain from a first-person perspective! Experience pathway activation by following signals. Create a true representation in your own mind.

They will demo and discuss development of their 3D model. It provides an accurate, immersive and interactive VR experience of the human brain. The rendering can be navigated freely, which allows the user to examine the sub-components of the brain individually. Programmers and scientific staff will be on hand to discuss the project, which was funded by NIDDK/NIH.

• About Health Impact Studios

Health Impact Studios is a diverse group with expertise in programming, medicine, psychology, science, gaming, and communications. We use gaming technology to support healthy lifestyle change.

We create games and simulations for healthcare professionals, medical students, and the general public on topics including obesity, addiction, and nutrition.

We Believe in Learning Through Games and VR Simulations: We believe in the power of gaming and active engagement as learning tools. Whether it’s a console, virtual reality, mobile, or desktop computer game, we think games can teach about health and impact lives.

• Demoing

As always, everyone is welcome to bring their VR headsets to give demos and this meetup is free to attend. If you will be demoing, send us a message or comment below.

After the presentation by Health Impact Studios, let us know if you have a start-up, project or another area of expertise that you would like to present on.

Thank you all for your patience as we bring RTPVR back to a regular meetup schedule! Huge thanks to the American Underground for allowing us to use their space again!

Please RSVP on Meetup.

InnerOptic at the Southwest Regional Library in Durham

We're very excited to host our next RTPVR Meetup at the Southwest Regional Library in Durham.

InnerOptic is a spin-off from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, focusing on medical applications of augmented reality and related technologies. In this talk, InnerOptic CTO Luv Kohli will discuss how InnerOptic’s visualization software evolved from a research project to a commercial, FDA-cleared product providing intuitive navigation for ultrasound-guided procedures. He will also discuss the potential benefits of augmented reality in various medical domains, and some of InnerOptic's recent work with the Microsoft HoloLens and Magic Leap One. A hands-on demo will be available for attendees to try, to facilitate further discussion.

Before joining InnerOptic, Luv Kohli received his PhD in Computer Science from UNC-Chapel Hill, where his dissertation focused on haptic interaction and perception in virtual environments. He has 15+ years of research and development experience with AR/VR, haptics, virtual locomotion, and 3D user interfaces.

Note: this is NOT at the South Regional Library near RTP. It's the Southwest Regional Library located at 3605 Shannon Road in Durham.

As always, everyone is welcome to bring their VR headsets to give demos after the primary presenters are finished. If you will be demoing, send us a message or comment below so we have enough tables ready.

Attendance is capped at 60 members, please RSVP on the Meetup.

Booz Allen at the American Underground

• The Meetup

We're thrilled to have Booz Allen present for our December 2018 meetup to wrap up the year to talk about different VR/AR/MR projects they have underway.

Booz Allen integrates data science and artificial intelligence to improve human-centered experiences. They have innovation studios across the U.S., comprised of talented thinkers, game developers, designers, architects, and data scientists, churning out the latest and greatest in immersive technology. Booz Allen's Immersive team builds simulated environments by leveraging immersive computing capabilities. They integrate data science and artificial intelligence to improve human-centered experiences.

The Immersive teams works on the presentation of artificial environments that replicate the real world through VR, AR, MR and enhanced input devices. They design and compose content for simulations and simulators, training systems, and intelligent dashboards. The flight simulators, medical simulations, and battle scenarios blend art, game elements, and academic theory to immerse the learner into a virtual experience that mimics reality.

They're also testing the validity of brain-computer interfaces, light field displays, sensory extensions, and many more systems to see how these technologies can change the way we interact with our world in the future.

Booz Allen is also expanding their Durham office to build their Immersive team - learn more at this meetup!

Virtual Races for Fitness: Research & Reality at the American Underground

• The Meetup

For our November meetup, we will have Henry Copeland from Racery.com speaking about virtual races and fitness.

Humans have been racing since the dawn of time. We race to hunt, to play, to excel. And, increasingly, we use virtual races to stay fit.

Henry Copeland has spent the last four years running Racery.com, which powers virtual races to motivate employee fitness. In this presentation, he'll talk about how companies like Fitbit, Peloton, Strava and Racery are trying (sometimes successfully, sometimes not) to keep people excited about fitness.

• Demoing

As always, everyone is welcome to bring their VR headsets to give demos. If you will be demoing, send us a message or comment below so we have enough tables ready.

After Henry's presentation, let us know if you have a start-up, project or another area of expertise that you would like to present on.
